About me

I’m a Sydney based software developer, serial tourist, amateur photographer, runner and wine enthusiast / obsessive. Software development is what I spend most of my time doing, but I’d happily spend as much time on any of the other passions as I do on software dev. Except, perhaps, the running bit.

On software and tech

I’ve been developing software, primarily in C#, for almost 15 years. I’ve spent the last ten years working in financial applications, which I’ve enjoyed due to the large scale, performance driven nature of the projects. Most projects I’ve worked on had a focus on real-time performance or low latency, scalability and reliability, and efficiency. I always look for projects which are challenging, and pushing new boundaries – both for the organisation and for myself.

The major reason I’m a C# fan is the combination of LINQ and the Reactive Extensions framework. They really make the language powerful for exploring and manipulating data at a high level, and in real-time with Rx. I ran a workshop on Rx in 2015, which was a very rewarding experience.

Outside my day job, I’m interested in a wide range of tech – high performance, learning new languages, new features of C#, data analysis and visualization, algorithms and data structures, javascript, and web technologies. I could easily fill a year off work with a bunch of Coursera courses on these topics. I took a Coursera course from Princeton on Algorithms in 2015, which I really enjoyed.

Away from the computer

I love travelling. I spent 7 years living in London, which is a fantastic place, and living away from home was an invaluable experience. My wife managed to fill up her passport with stamps, which I sadly fell short of. My favourite places have been Iceland, Patagonia, Scotland, and the national parks of the USA. But there’s always a new favourite place waiting to be explored.

Wine is a relatively new passion for me, but one I’m really enjoying. Trips to Napa and Burgundy were the spark that started the fire. There’s always something to try, to learn, and I love visiting wine regions.
